cataloging
MARC Records, the Library of Congress Subject Headings, Sears Subject Headings, Dewey Decimal System. . . .what does it all mean? Well, in Cataloging we found out the inner workings of many different kinds of these systems. It wasn't easy! Cataloging was certainly the hardest class I've taken, with many small details I had to try to remember. Here are just a few things I encountered in my time in Cataloging.
MARC Records
One of the hardest things I encountered in the class was learning about what MARC records are and what each sections means. In the class, we had to choose a book we stuck with through the semester and worked with. I chose a book called In the After by Demetria Lunetta, a young adult science-fiction novel I had just recently read. As I read the chapter on MARC records, I followed along in the MARC record of the book I had chosen and marked each section as they went over it in our textbook. The picture below are my notes as I followed along, trying to understand.
