secondary school resources
Much like the elementary school resources page, the secondary school resources class was focused on collection development and other tools needed for the high school librarian. How do you meet today's teenager's needs?
annotated bibliography
I took this class over the summer, before I started my current job. I must have taken out about 20 or so books from our library to read over the summer and prepare myself for the multiple book talks I would give when I returned. While I read a lot of young adult literature, I wasn't versed well on the popular YA books of today. What did my library have multiple copies of? This annotated bibliography helped me figure that out. Below is a slide show of all of the books I chose to focus my annotated bibliography on.
I'm excited to say that now I have read every single one of these books and have featured many of them in book talks. This assignment let me become familiar with my collection and gave me an excellent starting point for my reading list.
putting my study into practice
This class was really geared towards what I do as a librarian most of the day. So much of my time is devoted to collection development, helping teenagers with technology, and aiding that lost reader to find the perfect book for them. As I mentioned above, I have read all of the books I featured in my annotated bibliography and even more beyond those. I have featured many of them in book talks with multiple English classes here at Ponderosa. I tailor each book talk to each of the classes by using a Prezi presentation as a visual aid. Below as an example of one book talk I did for a freshman or sophomore class.
I love using these Prezi presentations because I can easily change out books for a new class so each book talk is different. I also love featuring book trailers to get the student's attention. Every time I show the book trailer for The Fifth Wave, as featured in the Prezi above, the book flies off of the shelf.
In addition to these book talks, I have been creating many exciting displays to feature a wide variety of books. Below is one of my favorite books displays I created for Banned Book Week. AS a former drama teacher, I have a flair for the dramatic, and this display definitely caught the teenager's attention.

In addition to this, I have featured many different displays on various holidays approaching, of course. A few of my favorite displays are pictured below. To the left, the display was entitled "Read It Before You See It" and to the right, the display was "Rainy Day Reads." Ironically, it never rained when the Rainy Day Reads display was up!
